Recall – daily visual memory game

Level1
β™₯β™₯β™₯
Memorize the lit tiles, then tap them back.

How to play

  1. Some tiles light up for a moment.
  2. When they go dark, tap every tile that was lit, in any order.
  3. Get them all and the next level adds one more tile. Tap a wrong tile and you lose a life.
  4. Three lives. See how high you can climb, then share your score.

The daily puzzle is the same for everyone and resets at midnight, so you can compare with friends. Practice mode gives you fresh patterns every time. For a different kind of challenge, try Sequence, our daily number memory game.

What this game exercises

Recall is a visual working memory task: you hold a picture in mind for a few seconds after it disappears. Working memory is the mental scratchpad you use to follow directions, keep a phone number in your head, or remember where you parked. Psychologists use tasks much like this one to measure how many items a person can hold at once. Read more in How memory works.

Research on whether memory games improve everyday thinking is mixed. People reliably get better at the game they practice, but that improvement doesn't clearly carry over to other skills. Treat Recall as a fun daily challenge, not a medical treatment.

Tips for reaching higher levels

Look for shapes. Five scattered tiles are hard to hold; an "L" plus a pair is easy. Grouping items this way is called chunking.

Say it silently. Naming positions ("top corner, middle row two") adds a verbal copy alongside the visual one.

Tap confident tiles first. Get the ones you're sure of down before the image fades.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good score?

Many adults can hold roughly four to seven items in visual working memory, so reaching levels 5 to 8 is typical. Past level 10, most people are relying on chunking strategies.

Why is it harder when I'm tired?

Working memory is sensitive to sleep, stress and distraction. Your score can move a level or two from day to day for those reasons alone.

Do I need an account?

No. Your streak and best score are saved in your browser on this device.

Can I play more than once a day?

The daily puzzle is one attempt, so everyone's score is comparable. Practice mode is unlimited.

What is hard mode?

In practice mode, hard mode flashes the tiles for about half as long and uses a bigger grid. Your hard-mode best is tracked separately.

How do streak badges work?

Play the daily puzzle on consecutive days to build a streak. You earn badges at 3, 7, 30 and 100 days. Miss a day and the streak resets. Track everything on your stats page.
